Making the Most of Google Authorship for Your Blog

Using Google Authorship to Grow Your BlogIn spite of many “ifs and buts” coming from the SEO community, Google authorship is a great initiative, especially for the bloggers.

Google Authorship (AKA the Author Rank) will help bloggers rank higher in the organic results on basis of something that they are good at i.e. writing or producing quality content.

Earlier the search engine results were marred by the websites using spammy tactics, while genuine bloggers find it hard to rank higher even if they were producing high quality content on regular basis. But now author rank will make it a tad easier for quality writers to boost their rankings by writing good content, instead of wasting their time and resources on acquiring back links.

If you are a blogger, writing on topics related to health or fitness (or any other niche for that matter), here’s how you can use the Google Authorship for your blog.

Get higher ranking

As earlier suggested, setting up Google Author’s profile and working on improving your author rank will help you rank better for weight loss or health related keywords. Not only that, but all of your content will be accompanied by your profile picture, which will result in an improved CTR, because the author’s picture will add to the credibility for that link.

Remember that you will have to produce good quality content on relevant topics (e.g. health, fitness, diet and exercise) to get these benefits, writing a hundred different articles on many different and irrelevant niches (anything other than health or fitness) will not really result in any significant benefit, because your author rank will be distributed into many different niches.

Own your content

Many fitness bloggers were annoyed by the spammers who used their content under different disguises, and the worst part is, at times spammers managed to rank higher than the actual authors. Setting up Google authorship and claiming all weight loss or fitness related content that you’ve produced, as soon as it is published on your own or someone else blog, will allow you to establish yourself as the original author of the content on the topic of health and fitness.

Find Guest Blogging Opportunities

Guest blogging is a great way to reach out to your target audience, for example people who are looking to shed those extra pounds, or office workers who are looking to stay fit with a hectic routine. Guest posting on other health and fitness blogs can not only provide you with some back links, but more importantly, the exposure. Author rank will add to the long list of benefits for guest blogging, getting featured on popular blogs will boost your author rank, which means you will be benefiting from the popularity or worth of these blogs.

Not only that, but all those FB likes, or tweets that your post will get can add to your author rank. But again relevancy is the key, and you will have to target blogs with a theme related to health, fitness, or weight loss.

Get more bloggers for your Blog

With content and Google author rank becoming an important ranking factor, more and more people will be looking to get their posts published on relevant blogs, and weight loss niche is no different. Also, these bloggers will be trying their best to write good quality content, which means your blog will attract real experts and knowledgeable writers from left, right, and center (given that it is a good blog). Not only you will be getting good content, but it will also give you an opportunity to build good relationships with other bloggers or online businesses coming from fitness or weight loss niches.

  • Hi Stacy and Misheal,

I know for me Misheal, I love going to Google and searching for content. The faces out beside those posts are watch catches my eye first. It’s like when you’re searching and you see a video all of a sudden, you’re just drawn to it instantly.

I read a post some time back that using Google authorship was going to end up being big. Not only for the search engines but like you said, look at the people who are trying to rip off our content. Of course Google knows who posted it first but having you as the sole owner of that content through this method will hopefully get others to reconsider before they move forward.

Glad I got mine set up as soon as I heard about it. You’re not leaving me in the dust.

Great post and very important subject Misheal, thank you for sharing.

  • Hi!

Google Authorship has been very helpful to genuine bloggers since it came out. Today, bloggers get high ranking not because of spammy acts or a lot of backlinks , but rather on the good quality content and this is exactly the right thing to happen.

  • I was searching more about Google authorship and I stumbled upon your blog. I like how you outlined what it was in clear language. It makes sense that Google is finally working on this feature. A concern I have however is what if someone else gets their content read by the search engine prior to the original author, does that mean the author will no longer get that credit?

  • I’m usually not an early adopter, but with google authorship I did get on the band wagon early. It has definitely made a difference in my traffic. Also, I’ve noticed that when I see photos displayed next to search results I am much more likely to click on them because the photo humanizes the content.

  • I just did this on my WP blog and I have to be honest. It worked! I’ve looked for the steps to do this on and off for about a year and everybody else made it so complicated. I don’t have an email address on the domain that I blog so it seemed impossible to set this up. I went thru your steps and the structured data tool reports that I’m verified and everything is working! I can’t wait to see what gets updated in the webmaster tools.

  • Google authorship is actually a plus for the blogger. From the first day I had of it I went out to learn about it and then implemented it immediately. Now there are plugins that makes it easier and anyone not taking advantage of it as a blogger is really losing much.

  • Hi Misheal,
Google Authorship is a great way to recognize the genuine content on the web. This recognition is very significant these days as the web is flooded with a lot of ‘cut-copy-paste’ bloggers. Thanks for sharing this valuable information.

I still haven’t setup Google Plus or authorship yet. I keep putting it off because I tell myself that I already have too much Google in my life do I really want more. I probably should, and one of these days I will if I can figure it out. I would rather not use a face shot because they remind me of a drivers license picture, and I am never happy or content with mine. One of these days I will jump on the band wagon.

  • Establishing authorship does seem to help lift your search engine rankings. For example, I have a blog about my city of Perth. It was on the top of the second page for searches for “Perth blog”. Not long after I established authorship I wound up in the middle of page one for it.

Can’t be totally sure that this was the cause, but I think it’s quite likely.

  • AuthorRank is yet another way for Google to effectively cut-out the end-around that SEOs have been using to manipulate search algorithms. Along with weighting up social signals, this clearly demonstrates how Big G and Bing are moving toward the semantic web and natural behaviors.
