Being self-employed has it rewards; however, too many times work and organization gets in the way of our personal development, which can actually help our business, thrive. The following tips should you with personal development as well as help make your business thrive at the same time.

1. Goal Reaching

Too many times, self-employed individuals have goals of reaching the sky whether it is in the amount of money they wish to earn or the number of customers they wish to serve. The first you must remember is to start slow. You can set long-term goals, which are great, however, it will take to reach these and the long wait may cause you to begin to feel like a failure. The best way to reach your goals and feel accomplished is to set smaller goals for shorter amounts of time. This way you will see progression and be able to boost your self-esteem.

2. Balance life and work

Self-employed individuals often work, work, and work and never take out time to relax or enjoy the benefits that come with being self-employed. Being self-employed means, you are the boss. Create a schedule of the hours of day you will work and the days of the week you will work and stick to it.

3. Manage your time

This may be similar to balancing life and work but this tip is more detailed. You need to learn how to use your time wisely. If you need to answer emails, telephone calls, place orders, etc… Create a schedule for each task you must during the day. If you can see the tasks down on paper on a notepad on your computer, you should be able to manage your time better and even get more work completed in a shorter amount of time.

4. Stress management

This can be a very difficult thing to do since you know that the entire company rests on your shoulders as well as ensuring your company is making enough money to sustain your household and the household of your employees. Learn how to relax.

This can be a very difficult thing to do since you know that the entire company rests on your shoulders as well as ensuring your company is making enough money to sustain your household and the household of your employees. Learn how to relax. Once you have accomplished the first three tips, you will actually be able to see some of your stress leave.

5. Watch your health

It does not matter how much work you have to do today, take out time to eat and ensure you are eating healthy foods. Do not just grab a donut or a burger on the run. Take time to exercise during the day if you only take a walk or get up from your desk and do stretches every couple of hours. You will notice that when you are healthy, you feel better and will be able to accomplish even more.

6. Manage your money

You need to create a system that will allow you to pay yourself a salary and put so much back into your company. Do not dip into either account to fund the other. Make a list of the monthly costs of your household and your company and set priorities.

7. Manage employees

The best way for you have time for your own personal development is to learn the weaknesses and strengths of your employees. Once you know which employees are best at the various tasks that need finished in a day, you will be able to coordinate all the work and enjoy some time for yourself.

  • Hi, Charles! Great post. I’d like to add my two cents regarding tip #2. Self-employed should also create at least a “mini-office” in a corner of a room, so they would know there’s no watching TV allowed while working, no house chores, just business and tasks. When they finish their working hours, they can do whatever they want, but while they’re “in the office,” they should forget they’re working from home.

These are great tips for personal development. And I believe that #4 stress management can be achieved when you take a step back once in a while and breathe. Mind clarity is one way of activating great ideas because we all need that to create success.

  • It certainly helps if you’re single! Being self-employed was a lot easier when I was single and could just spend the whole day in front of the computer trying to meet deadlines (in retrospect this was probably not the best way to work.) Unfortunately when you’re surrounded by family you have to share your time with everybody and can’t simply shut yourself off from the world.

  • Great tips Charles, but as an entrepreneur myself my one BIG thing has been learning how to be more realistic when setting my goals. Entrepreneurs by our nature are optimistic and if we’re fortunate enough to be doing work we love that just adds fuel to the fire. The problem is our eyes and passions are often bigger than what we’re realistically capable of doing – at least all at once. Learning to pace ourselves and taking time to celebrate small victories and milestones along the way is so important to enjoying the journey (not to mention mental health!).

  • Great tips here Charles,we all need to learn how to be more realistic when setting goals. Although we tend to become reclusives and withdraw from the world by spending far too much time in front of the computor, being self-employed still beats working in mainstream jobs ANY DAY.

  • Being self employed is tougher than working for someone else. You do not have the headaches, but the rewards can be great. Time is your most precious resource. You will run out of money before you run out of time.

Trying to balance a life with self employment is tough. However, it can be done. You have to rearrange your priorities.

As to balance, well – you’ve got to work hard in the first few years to build income. Then you can have balance. Just my opinion…

  • Life always sprinkle us with lessons. So there are still a lot of room for growth even if one is self-employed. Thanks to this article I was able to realize that.

  • Well done Charles. The things you said here are very true.

When I first started out with a home-based job where I managed my own time, I found it hard to get myself off work. I felt like there was so much to do. I worked on tasks not assigned for the day so that I could relax on the next day but I’d still work on another scheduled task the following day. I couldn’t get myself out of the loop. So I ended up tired and stressed. What snapped me out of it was my friend telling me to stop and just work on what needs to be done. I got too caught up trying to make room for more time for myself that I lost track of actually having time for myself.

I guess what you can learn from my experience is that when you are self employed, you need to strictly give yourself a specific time for work. If the day is over and you don’t feel tired yet, don’t do other tasks scheduled the previous day. Instead, use that time to relax and enjoy the rest of the day. Since you don’t have a boss to tell you when to stop and there’s no office clock saying work is over, you might forget about stopping and just go on working like I did.

  • Hi Charles
Thanks for Important Tips. Yes, I could agree that having people dependent on you definitely could keep you motivated to work more and earn more. Thinking of the bills to pay monthly could also help you keep working since it is very hard to have many debts. If you also have goals or something you want to buy and achieve it, use it as your motivations. Loving what you are doing is a good way of making yourself more focused.

It is Excellent Article and very important information. This is my second transition from home all summer to school, so I feel a lot more prepared than I was last year. (Although I THOUGHT I was prepared last year!) I’ve worked hard all summer so I’m taking the next couple of weeks to basically be on maintenance mode so I can be with my kids and organize for the school year, but also revisit my goals. For me, autumn is the time to revisit my goals anyway, so it really makes sense to me with this big transition time.

Self-employed is another way to be successful. It also has a lot of pros and cons to understand and it is important to be prepared. Management in all aspects is important, the time, the workload and more. As what you have discussed, all of these are important to understand because it is the key to accomplish your goal properly.

  • I think #3 is the most important one. When you are working as an employee at some company,
there is always someone else who manages your time. As a self employed you are responsible for
your own schedule. It is very easy to spend most of your time on unimportant tasks, but it will get you nowhere.
So the first trait a self employed person should have, is effective time management.

I think it’s also important to keep a lively and bright work area and take alot of breaks. Many people are isolated most of the day when they are working from home and it can really drive you a little nuts!
