I asked Danny Iny from Firepole Marketing about how he went about publishing his extremely popular book Engagement from Scratch. I asked him his opinion on self publishing versus traditional publishing.

Very helpful. Bottom line, whether you self-publish or go with a traditional publisher, you have to market yourself. Also, build the biz structure around your book with the appropriate services and products for your niche.

There’s obviously a lot that goes into publishing a book whether you choose self publishing or traditional publishing. Danny lays out the steps clearly, and states that writing the book is just the beginning of the process. His key point is that you have to create a marketing plan. In fact, he puts a strong emphasis on planning. He knows, because he’s self-published many books himself.

Thanks for sharing this video Stacy! I am an aspiring online marketer, but my expertise is more to blogging that publishing a book. Although, i know a thing or two about promotion, i’m sure there would be diversification on promotion. I was going to ask Danny on what was his marketing plans but he already mentioned that we can head to Google and just search. I think he provided a comprehensive overview on what type of publishing best fit a new comer. Keep posting informative videos!

A lot of things goes into publishing a book! like if you choose a traditional publishing or self publishing! Danny said that writing a book is just the begging of the process! He talks about emphasis on planning because he has clearly self published many books!Another basic thing is you need to market yourself, very important!

Thanks for this, really interesting video. I was not really aware of the self-publishing route until a friend of mine published her own book on Amazon. It is such a neat idea, and I can see that it can be much more profitable in the long run assuming you get enough promotion and so sales. It is amazing to see how technology allows every medium to be constantly reinvented, re-engineered and improved. Fascinating stuff.

Hi Stacy,
I totally agree with Danny, the hardest part is not writing the book, but marketing it.
I have a friend who has just published a hardcopy book and he is now discovering how tough it is to market the book, especially with limited money and time. In his case he used a publisher, but that gave me the feeling that I should use one when my book is ready, as Danny mentions in the video.

Well Danny is the best guy to ask about this right Stacy! He’s done it all.
I met a guy a couple years ago on MySpace who is a self published author and he took me through everything it takes to publish your book yourself. He definitely talked me out of it because the cost upfront to do it all is huge and then as Danny mentioned, you have to market the book yourself.
In the long run though I really do believe that is the smartest way to go because going through a publisher, they take the majority of your profits. I know they do a lot of the work but kind of seems not worth it to me unless you hit it really really big.
