  • Excellent advice. I started out with a free blog on wordpress.com. I very quickly realized I needed a self hosted blog to be able to do what I wanted. Switching is a pain. Its better to just start off right with a self hosted blog.

Its only a few bucks a month anyway :)

    Hi Micah,

That’s exactly why it’s best to start out with the right type of hosting, nobody wants to deal with moving a blog!

  • Good tips. I also started out with free hosting, but quickly realized that self hosting gave me much more freedom. Also I would emphasize that patience is a big key to your success, because it will take time before you see the fruits of your labor. There’s a learning curve in the beginning as you find your voice and writing style. Then you have to learn the techniques that work for you in promoting your blog. All that takes time, but it will be worth it in the end.

I have to admit these are good tips for us to become successful in the future.the most important part here is motivation once we are motivated in something it will bring us to our goals in life, aside from that we should plan or set short term goals and long term goals.

    Hi Kate,

Yes we do need to stay motivated, that is extremely important! Without motivation we won’t accomplish much at all.

It’s really inspiring to get to read an entry about the humble beginnings of a person who is already successful online. And it motivates newbie’s to really think that hard work will eventually pay-off. What’s really the most important trait that a person must have in order to be successful online? By the way, thanks for sharing it. I learned tons of things.

I’m glad that you found this useful! I think that there are many traits that help a person to have success online. One important trait is the willingness to learn from others. We need to always learn and grow or we won’t make progress.

  • Incredible post!!! These are great tips for newcomers into blogging. And yes SEO (Search Engine Optimization) plays a very important role for your blog as it helps in making your website search engine-friendly so that when an internet user makes any search, your site or blog would come among the top search results.
Doing proper keyword research for your post and carefully and properly optimizing the post is also of a major use to have valuable readers to your site.

  • One way of attracting traffic to your blog is to ask your friends to help out with that. It may seem a bit straightforward, but this tactic still works. If you’re going to ask them kindly, the higher the chances that they’ll help you out, of course. Who knows? Your friends might even be the catalysts to your fame.

“Though a free blog may be the way to go if you are blogging only for a hobby and not building a brand.”

I agree with this. In the early years of blogging, my personal blog was in a free hosing site; I shifted to my own domain when I started utilizing blogs for business.

  • Blogging is one of the best ways to express yourself and to become known if that is your desire.

I did not start with the wordpress dot com platform, I put up a self hosted blog the first time. It really worked for to do it that way, but I can see where if someone was only interested in writing, then the the hosted version would be a pretty good deal.

Altogether, a great post, Stacy, thank you for sharing it with us.

For those who are truly new to blogging, opening up a free WP blog is the way to go. It will help newbies to learn the ropes about the basics of blogging, without ever obliging them to pay anything upfront! Also, blog hopping and commenting in order to meet new bloggers is a great experience for anyone who is just starting out on their blog site.

  • You did a really good job Stacy in describing the difference between the self hosted blogs and having one of the free blogs. The WordPress platform has become an amazing opportunity for even the beginner entrepreneur that is serious about their business. Self hosted has so many more features that can benefit a business blog.

I will be happy to share this information to my community because your other tips make for a great resource!

  • Great tips here, Stacy!

Too many people think they can spam blogs. And while some blogs may not be picky about what comments they approve, all the best ones tend to allow only comments that continue the conversation — even if the point is in disagreement with the original post. As long as you are respectful and add to the conversation, I’ve found most blog owners are more than willing to approve your comments.

As to whether you should do free or paid… If you do free, you must abide by their rules. But don’t complain when they shut you down if you’re not following their rules! When you do paid hosting, you usually have way more freedom with what you can do with your site.

  • Hi,

I recently started my own blog. I think that one of the most important points we need to decide about when starting a blog is a subject. As mentioned in the article deciding on our niche makes targeting the audience easier. Also, we can find writing the blog really interesting. A lot of people struggle about their blogs as they decide to write about something they are not really passionate about. Later they will realize the blogging task is really boring and tedious.

Thanks for this article. It’s really interesting.
