According to a December 2007 survey, researchers found that 84 percent of Americans are happy with their lives. While this may still hold true today, many of us can testify that life can get very stressful at times, and we may not always be satisfied with the way our lives are going. While few of us will ever achieve full bliss, there are ways in which we can improve our quality of life. Check out these eight tips to help you lead a happier life.

Never put your goals on the back burner. It seems like an obvious thing to do: Follow your goals. The problem is that many of us don’t, thinking that it’s “not the right time” or that “I can do it later”. The truth is, many people who think that way never reach their goals. No matter how much you can do now, it’s important that you don’t forget about your goals and that you are always doing something to get there. By doing this, people create meaning for their lives, and they become more satisfied once they reach their goals.

Sustain healthy relationships. One of the most important things you can do to lead a happier life is to sustain healthy relationships. Although you should consider spending more time with your partner, this does not just mean having a strong relationship with your partner, but this refers to everyone you have a relationship with. Talk often with friends and family, and don’t avoid spending time with them.

Avoid people you don’t like. A good friend once told me that you can’t pretend to like people when you don’t; it just makes life more difficult. This may sound mean, but it can help you brighten your mood and help you stay happy. This doesn’t mean that you have to be cruel and tell them to stay away from you. It simply means that you shouldn’t pretend to like someone and spend time with them when you don’t want to. You are compromising your own happiness because you think it will make someone else happy, and that is not necessarily healthy.

Maintain good physical health. You probably hear this all the time, but research shows that people who are healthier are usually happier. This is partly because exercising releases endorphins that make you happy, and eating healthy can help you maintain excellent psychological health. Additionally, staying healthy helps people boost their self-esteem, ultimately making them happier.

Help others out. Volunteering is a great way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It may not seem like something you want to do at first, but simply taking a few minutes to help someone out with something can make you feel great. Volunteering often at events, such as those sponsored by a church or donating your blood, can help individuals feel great because they know they are doing something good for others.

Keep your environment clean and organized. One thing that can make people upset is by living in an unorganized environment. You may not even realize it, but coming home to an unkempt house can put you in a bad mood. Instead, do your best to keep your home, car, and work area clean. It is also important to keep your schedule organized as to reduce stress and frustration.

Laugh and smile often. Laughing and smiling actually have physiological effects that can make people happy. Just like exercising, laughing and smiling release chemicals in your brain that make you happy. Go out often to comedy shows, visit family and reminisce, play games with friends, or do anything else that makes you laugh and smile.

Try your best to remain stress-free. Maintaining a stress-free life is the best way to maintain happiness. All of these suggestions can help relieve stress, but there are plenty of other ways as well. Do your best to avoid stress to help yourself stay happy.
