Oh No – Another Post About Pinterest!

Are you tired of hearing about Pinterest yet? I’m sure you are but this won’t be the typical Pinterest post so feel free to read on.

My Original Plan

My original plan was to not join Pinterest because the last thing that I needed was another social media site to learn and possibly enjoy spending time on.

I was very happy with Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter. The more that I tried to ignore it the more that people were talking about it. Everywhere. Other bloggers, entrepreneurs, friends on Facebook, people on the mom boards that I’m on.

It was everywhere and there was a lot of buzz and excitement surrounding it!

Finally I sucked it up and asked for an invite. There was some issue signing in, it required some sort of authorization through Facebook to start an account and there was some type of a glitch. I spent too long that day trying to make it work and eventually gave up and decided to stick with my initial decision to avoid it.

Of course Pinterest was still everywhere that I turned and I read an interesting post by my friend Ilka Flood about how Pinterest can help get more blog traffic and asked her for an invite. This time I was able to get an account set up.

Why Pinterest is My Favorite Social Networking Site

I have loved it since I got started! I’m not nearly as excited about any of the other sites and if I have a free moment I love to use it “pinning”. Why do I love it so much? I’m glad that you asked!

It’s fun! First and foremost it’s simply fun. I find it relaxing to sit and scroll through the images that others have pinned. Apparently I’m one of the masses who is tired of reading and enjoys images.

It’s much easier to find what you’ve shared. Have you ever wanted to go back and find something that you shared on Facebook or Twitter a long time ago? Good luck finding it. It gets buried down everything else because there is no real order aside from time.

You can repin the ones that you like onto your own boards and if you like something but don’t want to repin it you can just like it and it is saved in your “likes”.  Everything is saved where you put it making it so much easier to go back to it.

Discovery! There is so much to learn and discover on Pinterest. Want to find a new idea for dinner? You know it’s there. Looking for ideas to declutter your home? You’ll find it. Want to make your own home cleaning products? Done. I’ve got a wonderful air freshener that I made in two minutes with stuff I had at home. Looking for ideas on how to build your blog? You’ll find it there too.

It’s a form of self expression. You can create boards on any topic that you want and put any pictures that you want. It allows for a lot of creativity and you can express all kinds of interests that you have.  It’s not all just about food, puppies and kids. Your imagination is your limit!

It reminds me of when I was growing up and I would decorate my bedroom walls with all kinds of posters, pictures, album covers, or anything else that expressed my individuality at the time.

You can see some of mine below. You can see how I’ve had fun with it. I’m definitely using Pinterest to be about ME and not just business or a brand. If you follow me on Pinterest you will see more than just “Me, Inc.” You’ll get to know me much more than before!

Pin Boards

You can promote your posts. Oh yeah…that aspect too! I’m not going to go into that too in depth because you can find information on that topic all over the place. Though I do recommend Ilka’s post that I linked above.

The possibility for something to viral on Pinterest is pretty good if you have a great image and say something good about it. If people like it they will repin it to their boards and their friends will do the same.

I was quite surprised when I pinned a link to my post on meditation it was immediately repinned by someone that I don’t know. My other blog pins haven’t gone that far yet but I saw the potential with my meditation post.

If you haven’t joined yet and would like an invite leave a comment with the email you want associated with Pinterest. I would be very happy to invite you!

To Your Success,

Stacy

  • It sure is wonderful Stacy!

Just like you, I just can’t seem to get off Pinterest! And yes, people whom we don’t know are also able to pin your content or like it, and it’s almost like a chain reaction- as their friends further, if the content is liked by them also- keep pinning along :)

I think it is wonderful indeed, provided you have time to spare to check out all the boards of others and don’t really get glued to it :)

    Thanks for sharing :)

  • Hi Stacy, so far I love Pinterest. I have used it a little but not to its full extent yet. I think the largest issue is making the images look good and then also remembering to share when you don’t see the button. Also I’ve visited some Pinterest pages that take forever to load because… guest what lol, they have to many images. I don’t know how they’re going to solve this issue. With that said I still give it a thumbs up because it’s really cool to use and also fun. I’ll also share this on my Pinterest Tips board.

  • My only issue now is that with all of the legal questions about Pinterest and their EULA agreement. It pretty much puts you in the hotseat if someone where to have an issue with an image you posted on Pinterest.

Just make sure that YOU own the image and it should be all good.

I’ve been using it for awhile now to not only promote my blog – but you can create boards just about anything! LOL for some reason I did one about my favorite TV shows growing up.

  • I have joined Pinterest but don’t see any reason to roam around there. It’s far more productive in Facebook/Twitter or even LinkedIn. Just my personal opinion.

  • Hi Stacy,

Thanks so much for the mention and link! I love Pinterest for the same reasons you do. It’s just a fantastic site. But, it also can get pretty addicting. So I do set my alarm to remind me not to spend too much time on there.

Again, thanks so much for the mention.

    Have an awesome weekend!

  • I am totally with you when it comes to how I feel about Pinterest. I never thought I’d like such a thing, but the more I get into it and the more I find awesome, interesting photos to share, it is fast becoming my favorite.

I still love the old school networks, but Pinterest offers that quick way of connecting and finding inspiring, cute, funny or social aspects that you can’t find anywhere else.

It seems REAL, too, like people are on there to truly share something awesome instead of just promoting.

    Thanks for the post. :)

    Hi Morgan,

I think that’s a great point that there is a lot more sharing and a lot less promoting. I have seen some people who mostly self-promote but they are in the small minority!

  • Initially, people thought that Pinterest was mostly for the fashion, wedding and art and crafts industry. Now it’s quite clear that many other types of businesses are benefiting by using this visual bookmarking website.

We are visual creatures. People are liking this platform because it’s real fun. Pinning images and getting your images repinned is definitely a wonderful experience. That’s why more and more people are flocking to Pinterest.

  • Hey Stacy,

I heard about Pinterest when Brankica from Bloglikeastar wrote an extensive guide about it – Joined it through her link – but I didn’t find it that interesting (fact is that I didn’t spend much time with it because I don’t really want to waste time on another social networking site). I am glad that you enjoy it, but I am just going to stick with my decision for some time because right now, I don’t really have the time to spend – I could still find time but I am just going to stay away :D

It is a lot of fun to scan through all of the images and see new things. It’s also a great way to get links back to you blog. That’s really why I joined, but I think I’m going to use it for a lot more than just that now. It’s an easy way to share the things that you like.
