What’s in a letter? It depends on what type of letter we are talking about! Last week one activity that we discussed was writing a letter from our future self to us right now.
In that exercise we imagined ourselves at some point in the future after our new habit has been a part of our lives for some time.
We wrote to ourselves about how the habit has benefitted our lives and where it has helped to bring our future self: living a better or healthier lifestyle or many other possible benefits.
Today we are going write a similar letter but it has some significant differences as you will see.
The letter for today is going to be a letter TO our future self. Whereas the other letter helped to give us a vision and inspiration for what the habit will bring us this one will be making promises to the future self, it will help with solidifying goals.
In other words you will be promising yourself to follow through with creating this habit to bring benefits to your future self.
Some questions to consider while writing a letter to your future self:
- Which future self are you writing to? 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, etc.
- What are you specifically promising to do?
- How will you fulfill these promises?
- What do you hope to accomplish specifically?
- How do you hope to improve the life of your future self?
- Where do you hope to take your future self and when?
Thinking about these questions (and any other questions that you think of for yourself!) will help solidify in your mind the reasons for building this habit and the other goals that you have that go along with building the habit.

Hey Stacy,
Beautiful excercice. You start from a place of fulfillment and success from the very beginning.
In writing a letter to my future self I would be first of all grateful for the great journey that will follow, for the opportunities that will come in my way to grow, have fun and express my potential.
Also I would commit to live every day, in thought, feeling and action like my future self. We don’t have to wait to get somewhere in order to be something..first we are and then we’ll arrive to our destination.
Keep going with the challenge
Have an inspired day,
Radu

Thank you for sharing, how did the letter writing go?

You know, this is such a powerful idea. Self actualization can be greatly assisted by a goal – so why not define the goals yourself? I like this idea, quite a bit actually, and I’m going to start on the 1 year letter right now.

I like this one equally as much as I liked the other one. It feels like I’m making my intended habits and goals even more of a reality.
