A Fun and Free Tool to Improve Your Writing

Improve Writing, Improve TypingI recently discovered a fun and free tool to improve my writing! I have been using it daily for nearly a month and I have already seen improvement in my writing!

What have I gained?

My speed is improving, my typos are reduced, and I am able to come up with ideas faster making it easier to write from scratch! I used to really dread sitting down to type out a post when I was in a time crunch – when I knew I had to publish a post either that day or the next and I had nothing lined up yet…you know how that goes. Obviously the ideal is to have a bunch of posts lined up so that doesn’t happen but the ideal isn’t always the reality.

What is it?

It is a free site called 750Words which gives you a private, blank canvas to write out 750 words (approximately 3 pages) per day. It’s not a blog or a journal, it’s completely unique from anything else out there.  You even get rewards for your writing to encourage daily writing!

How does it work?

Every day you log in:  you can create a login or you can login with Google, Facebook, Yahoo, or OpenID – just be sure to login with the same method each time so you can get the credit for those rewards!

As soon as you are logged in you are taken to your private, blank page for the day. Once there the timer starts and you start typing. You just type what comes to mind without regard to typos or anything, just type.  Nobody is going to see it so perfection doesn’t matter.

At first I had a difficult time not going back to fix my errors. I had a hard time letting go of the need to have everything looking just right. I found that as a result my typos actually became less over time because I knew that I wasn’t going to go back to fix anything. It slowed down my typing speed temporarily but that too has improved.

What are the rewards?

You earn badges for certain activities. You get your first badge after just three straight days of typing! There are also badges for being a speedy typer, not getting distracted, among other things. It’s always nice to get rewards!

You also get points each month for your daily writing, the more you write the higher your score. You can compare your score with other members to see where you stand. If you are really brave you can sign up for the monthly challenge, if you don’t write every day you will end up on the wall of shame, but if you complete it you get a really special badge and you get your name on a good wall!

How can I remember to write every day?

They send out a “daily nudge” email to remind you to type that day.

Thanks to Lesa Townsend from Conversation 2 Sales for sharing this amazing and fun tool!

To Your Success,

Stacy

  • I will examine this site. But, I don’t think it will appeal to my psyche.
Maybe because I have to write every day (at least five daily reports for clients, a weekly report, plus major submissions, plus my goal of a blog post or two)- but I think it’s more aimed at the tyro to get their motivation up- or perhaps for those who motivation may have waned.

The timing of this is very apt too seeing as though it has taken me all day (and now night) just to write one flipping article (well it is 2000 words so it’s practically 2 articles in 1). This is taking me back to university days where I would stay up all night to get my paper done. Arrrghh!

Not being a ‘writer’ I find it really hard to just stay focused on the article in hand without faffing about with other stuff. I’m in need of something to help me focus and this tools seems to be just the trick. Thank you Stacy!

  • What I’ve discovered from my use of 750words.com is that the more writing I have to do, the more I need an outlet for that wild, uncensored, creative voice that lives inside me. 750words gives me a safe place to let that part express itself, without worrying about subject matter or punctuation or anything at all.. which actually helps me to bring more focus to my required writing. Making time for 750words actually saves me time in the long run (even with a long to-do list). Plus, I’ve found interesting revelations and inspirations in the free-form 750words writing that I’ve been able to use elsewhere.

750words.com isn’t for everyone, true. But those of you who already do a lot of writing on a regular basis should give it a try anyway. There’s no cost… you can quit at anytime. And you might just find that it benefits you in a way you never expected.
