How to Move From Negative to Positive Thinking

I know how it feels to be stuck in a negative thinking. I spent a long time speaking negatively to myself, thinking negative thoughts, believing negative beliefs. I’ve been there, done that and even got the t-shirt…

One very important thing that I learned is that what we allow ourselves to think becomes our entire belief system and also our reality.

Let me say that again in case you didn’t catch it.

The thoughts that we allow ourselves to think about and focus on become our entire belief system and also our reality.

If you expect negative things to come your way then you will not only be on the lookout for them but then when something that you perceive as negative happens you will also tell yourself, “I knew that would happen!” and you have completed a self-fulling prophecy. This is also known as the law of attraction.

You will then continue in that cycle with each event and thought that you experience. Your beliefs and thoughts will continue to reinforce your experiences and vice verca.

But if you allow yourself a different set of thoughts you will react differently to the same negative things that happen in life.

You will need to replace those thoughts with new ones.

Instead of giving into the negativity of it you will be able to say, “This is a challenge to overcome” and you will look for the good in the situation and you will find ways that you can grow and learn from the experience. It will indeed become a positive experience because of the action that you took. When all said and done you will feel on top of the world!

The only difference between those two scenarios are the mindsets. I have seen many instances where two people go through the same difficulty and the negative person digs themselves deeper into a hole whereas the other person comes out a better person. The second person isn’t better than the first, they just chose to handle their thoughts differently and therefore their actions are completely different allowing them a different outcome.

To move from negative to positive thoughts I suggest the following:

  • Pay close attention to your thoughts and the way that you talk to yourself.
  • Write down the thoughts and self talk for a day and see if you’re allowing the thoughts that you desire.
  • Use afformations to build new thought and self talk patterns in your life.

You will eventually start to have new beliefs and you will be able to create a whole new belief system for yourself! You may not even think that it will make a difference (I’ve been there too!) but you will surprise yourself when you start to see changes in the way that you think and look at things.

The thoughts that you think have so much power and they even wire your brain into different patterns. It’s amazing how it works! A while ago I read a very powerful post on this topic called How Positive Thinking Rewires The Brain. I highly recommend you read it! • Hi Stacy, I find when I’m in a crappy or bad mod I cannot write content. I just cannot find it in myself to write positively. When this happens I just give it a rest or try to change my mood somehow. Your mood 100% reflects the type of work you can write and produce.

  • I see this happen all the time among servers I work with. They’ll get a table and as they look at it — before they’ve even walked up to the table — and say they’re going to get a bad tip off of it. I’ve done this a few times myself, but try to catch myself when I do it. The thing is, those who do this regularly also complain about an hour later when they get a bad tip.

I’m not always successful with remembering to do this, but I try to think about getting a good tip from a table as much as I can. And I usually do. Even if I do get a bad tip, once I get past the disappointment (pretty quick for me), I try to start looking at what could have gone better so that if it’s something I had control over, I can do better the next time. Just following that little strategy quickly helped me improve as a server.

    Great post today, Stacy!

  • Thinking too much negative can absolutely make you crazy! Not literally crazy but can totally destroy your mood and in the long run can ruin your plans. Procrastinating all day long won’t be helpful, but avoiding it to happen can be very difficult. It’s just a matter of improving yourself and focusing more on the positive side of the situation.

  • Beautiful post Stacy!

Yes indeed, I think most of us go through the negative mood swings when everything we see is negative and we are not able to think straight- due to various reasons. And you are so right in saying that negativity is what attracts more negativity- that is the law of attraction.

I guess we have to make the changes within ourselves, without really trying to make changes in things or the people around us. That would also change the negative thoughts to positive ones.

  • Well, It’s really difficult to overcome from negative thoughts. First you must find out that your thinking is negative only then you can take corrective actions to convert it into positive thinkings. Self talk is important so that you can analyze your way of working and thinking and it’s the best way to overcome from negative thinkings.

I think your idea of writing down your thoughts can be very powerful. If you just record all your (unfiltered) thoughts and self-talk on a notepad or your journal, and then look at it, you may notice and realize patterns and inner beliefs that you were not aware of.

  • Hi Stacy,

Our thoughts are things. We attract what we think about in the long run. A good audio program that has helped me think positively is the CD “The Strangest Secret” by Earl Nightingale. You are basically what you feed your mind.

The good news is that we have the power to reprogram our minds to think healthy, positive thoughts. Sometimes a detox of the mind is necessary.

Absolutely. The power of positive thinking should never be under-estimated. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, nothing is good or ill but thinking makes it so, and the Schrodinger’s Cat isn’t dead or alive until you open the box and look at it. Your perceptions can have a very real effect on how your life unfolds.

I certainly have my fair share of negative thinking. It’s a constant alignment process. However, I have found that the more I affirm the positives, the greater is my ability to maintain the positive paradigm. My favorite afformation is to ask myself “what-if”. I don’t answer the question of course but I trust my subconscious to come up with some insightful answers.

    Stacy Reply:

    Hi Sara,

I haven’t actually read the book, but I have read a lot about the LOA and the theory behind it. I have found it true.

A good example that I read once was if you decide to look for a used motorcycle you will end up finding one simply because your mind will be open to finding them. You will suddenly notice used motorcycles all over the place, when before you decided to look for them you would not have noticed. It wasn’t that they weren’t there, but you weren’t looking before. The same applies for negative and positive thinking and expectations.

Negative thinking is something that will stop you from accomplishing the things you desire in your life.

Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones is something I first came across in Napoleon’s book “Think and Grow Rich”. I think utilizing affirmations is the best way to replace negative thoughts in your belief system with positive ones. Thanks for sharing.

I used to have lots of negative thoughts until I realized, after much reading and exploring, that being positive was something I could choose. Now, I am much more positive. It really is affirming when one of my friends tell me they think I am nice to be around and they consider me to be inspiring to them.

I totally agree with this post. our thought process affects who we become. i’ve seen how joining a new group and trying to change my negative thought on a certain aspect of my business immediately attracted a new client from that same day (some people would say it was a divine connection or something cos the client wasnt even in the new group i joined). but the point is, when you change your thoughts to something new, you attract people and things that are like what you now think about. John Maxwell talks about the law of magnetism in 21 irrefutable laws of leadership and i think our thought patterns are actually like that.

    I agree Stacy,

Negative thoughts are like poison. They will destroy us slowly (and sometimes, painfully). I was once a victim of it. But after reading some self-improvement books from Napoleon Hill and Brian Tracy, I understand that if I wanna be a better person, first I have to believe that I can become that better one.

Now I’m more self-confident. And the fact that I’m now building my business online tells the story. I haven’t had much success yet, but I believe I will make it soon.
