Friday Favorites: How to Create a Kindle Book

Swimming In The iPoolThank you to those of you who answered my question last Friday – what would you like to read about on Fridays?

Based on the replies I’ve decided that each Friday I will have a “Friday Favorites” where I will share some sort of favorite thing that I came across during the week.

It may be favorite links, it may be a favorite blogging tip, it may be a personal development technique that has made a difference in my life. It may be something else altogether or some combination of them all.

In case you were wondering – yes, I am aware of the fact that today is Saturday! I didn’t pre-schedule this post for publishing on Thursday when I was writing it because I wanted to add in the link to my new kindle book that went live on Friday. We were having internet connection issues and I was without the internet for about a day and a half. But here I am …175 emails later!

This week’s favorite

The first is a resource that I came across that several of you have expressed an interest in learning more about.

When I shared with you that I created my first kindle book not too long ago, quite a few of you wanted to learn more. I assured you that I would put together a how-to guide, but alas someone else has done that for me this week! He did a fantastic job so I will simply share the link with you!

First I want to share some of the benefits of creating a kindle book:

  • It is free – no upfront cost at all!
  • You have a lot of readers – kindle is a free app on most smart phones, desktops, and also the iPod Touch and the iPad.
  • If you have a PDF book that you are already using on your blog you can use that.
  • There are several ways to upload your book in the proper format. I found that writing the ebook in OpenOffice and then choosing the option to send it to my desktop as an html file was the easiest. Directly uploading a PDF only seems to work if you are writing your PDF in Adobe writer.
  • It only takes a few minutes to set up the book once you have it written and ready.

Now learn how! 7 Steps To Get Your Ebook On The Amazon Kindle Store

I submitted my second Kindle book on Wednesday and I’m excited about this one, it’s not a PDF that I already had written. It’s a new one that I specifically wrote to sell. It is an in depth 63 page book (on PDF, kindle pages are different) on how to create a successful blog called Successful Blogging. My blog has come a long way in 13 months and I show you how I did it so that you can too! I am also planning on making it available on PDF via paypal for my non-kindle readers soon.

I want to hear from you! Have you created a Kindle book? What has been your experience? Do you have an interest in creating one?

To Your Success,

Stacy

  • Hi Stacy,
This is amazing. I don’t know why it seems like such a revelation, but I hadn’t thought of the kindle. I did a bit of research (prompted by this post) and even though you can’t upload a free product to Kindle (unless you go through your publisher, if you have one), a lot of people are offering their free stuff for a very low price, like $.99. Since Amazon gets a lot more traffic than most bloggers, this could be a sweet deal.

I’m going to work on creating a special Kindle version of my free ebook this week. Ooh, I’m excited about the possibilities. :)

Thanks for opening this door, so many of us have dormant talents and Kindle is just the avenue is you don’t get accepted or have the money to approach brick and mortal publishing houses. Not all of us have the endurance Vic Hansen from Chicken Soup for the Soul had.

  • eanine Byers Hoag from JDressing My Truth

This is quite a timely topic!

I have a pdf ebook for sale on my blog that I intend to use as a kindle book, too, but I have heard that converting it can be a problem, that often it does not look right once it is on Kindle and I am not sure how to fix it.

I could try copying my word doc into open office and then try doing what you did. Do you think that would work, Stacy?

    Stacy Reply:

    Hi Jeanine,

It does take some playing around to get it to convert, and even so I haven’t found a way to make it convert perfectly.

But at the same time I don’t think that kindle readers expect kindle books to look the same as a print book. At least I stopped expecting it after reading a few kindle books. It’s a different medium and a different experience.

    [Reply]

    Stacy Reply:

Oh and to answer your last question, if you try what I did with OpenOffice it should make it a lot easier to convert. Though it will likely still take some playing with it, the first one that I created took a long time. The second one not as long, and hopefully each time it will get easier and easier!

Congratulations! I never knew that anyone could create a kindle book and sell it! I love taking my kindle while I travel because it eliminates all the extra weight in books. Are you offering your books for free right now?

    [Reply]

    Hi Leah,

One of the great things about Kindle is that *anyone* can do it! :)

I have some of my books for free, two for sale. http://growwithstacy.com/books/ At this point I still need to add my newest book to that list.

  • Hi Stacy,
Thanks to Jayne Kopp who alerted me to your blog during a conversation I had with her, I’ll be checking this out and putting the first of 2 books I have prepared on there. The good news is that I’ve done the harder bit of writing the book. It’s the easy bit of sharing that I’m up to next. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, if you have already written the books it will be a quick process to get it on kindle. Though as with anything new it will be a learning process and the first time will take the longest. You’ll do great!

  • Hey STacy this is such a useful post. I watched a very inspirational newscast (go figure… inspiration on the news is rare) of a girl who makes a blinking fortune selling kindle books. I think this is awesome for those who cannot or don’t want to afford publishers.

Thanks for offering such useful info.

  • I’ve also ventured down the ebook route.

What I did was submit my book to Smashwords first (they only accept original works), as they will supply you with an ISBN, plus will distribute your book to Apple, Barnes and Noble and others.

Then I saved the document as html, used mobipocket creator (free software owned by Amazon) to convert the html file to a prc file. I then uploaded the prc file to Kindle (with my ISBN number). The value of doing it via a prc file is that you get the formatting right for kindle (pdfs don’t convert as well).
