The Best Blog Post Ever!

Best Blog PostHow often do you attempt to create the best blog post ever?

Do you try to make every post the best post ever?

Or do you give a real go once a week?

Just for your guest posts? Or contest posts?

How often do you think that you should attempt to write your best post? What do you think is realistic?

Do you ever publish sub-par material just to keep a schedule? Is it acceptable for you post just any old thing? Is it better to post something or wait until you have something to showcase?

I understand the temptation to publish just some old post to get it published for the day. I have weeks where my offline life is really hectic or my baby is up every hour each night for a week (growth spurt) and I feel like I don’t have anything quality to give – but I don’t want my blog sitting there without new activity either.

I definitely know that some of my material is better than the rest, and that some of it is not as great as the rest. Sometimes the comments and shares are coming in at a rate that surprises me. Then I know that I have a winner!

Other times I try something new to see how it goes over, or I am sure that it will go over well, and I find out …that it didn’t. I know that I need to either tweak it in the future or abandon it altogether. Sometimes a post is a learning experience, and that’s okay!

I want to showcase you! Leave a link to your best post in the comments after sharing your thoughts on how often bloggers should aim for the best. (Due to leaving a link in the comment I may need to approve each one so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t show immediately!)

Thanks so much to Hector Cuevas for this idea!

To Your Success,

Stacy

Stacy, I find that if I’m truthful and open in my posts, and readers can feel a connection or find encouragement, it has been successful. While I try to write five days a week, sometimes my personal life takes priority and I don’t find the time to write something meaningful. I try not to post “just to post”. If I ever learn how to take good photos on my camera, I’d like to post some now that I’ve seen bloggers link up to a “wordless Wednesday” meme. My thanks to you because I am in the (slow) process of migrating to Word Press from Blogger. Each week, I look forward to your tips! Have a great week,
    Carrie

    Hi Carrie,
I agree with you that giving value or connecting with readers is a great way to have a greatest post! I don’t like to “just post” either though sometimes sitting down to just post is a great springboard. If it’s not great then I will save it for later to revise or ditch.

Good luck with your switch! Have you read my post “Why WordPress?” One comment explains how to make the switch!

    Hi Stacy!

Thanks for inviting me to your Blog…from The Blogging Mastermind Comment Tribe’s page. :)

I believe that we should aim for our best every time we
add new content to our Blogs. However, if we fall short
with 1 entry, then we adjust & come back stronger with
    our next 1.

The important lesson here is that we keep ‘showing up’ to
    the game!!

  • Stacy,
Great question. I try to always make my posts great. I try to post daily and have had times where I didn’t think I was going to get a good post out, but was very lucky in April to get what I consider quality content.

I sometimes sit here for days trying to make one post exactly the message I want to get across. I sometimes have great ideas and once I begin to write it doesn’t come out right. So, I keep those in my draft list and hope it will come to me and I can make it work.

I also agree that sometimes I think something is going to rock and it doesn’t. Then there are some that are short and sweet and I like them, but don’t think there will be as many comments on them and I am happily surprised!!

My best post ever is in my commentluv below!

  • Best post thus far. Probably http://www.johnjeremyvines.com/2011/04/08/on-negativity/
Even with a quick blurb, I’m a perfectionist. My latest is all of 46 words long and I still revised and edited it several times, a couple of which happened after it was published.
Quality over quantity always. Putting something out there just to put it out there is a huge waste of my time and that of the reader.

  • Great idea for an article Stacy.
I think I’ve done pretty well on posting acceptable content. I think I’d said before that some article I’ve written that I thought were very good had quite a low reaction. The point here is about providing contact that people want regardless of our own opinions of our material.
The other thing I do is to try not to work too hard at the content. I sometimes experiment a little.
I find the best stuff comes from going with the flow and being creative as I go.
Hmmm. Now what to post what I consider is my best blog. How about this one from a day I felt very passionate!

    Hi Marty,
I think it does take experimenting to find out what receives a high reaction. I think that especially in personal development what we expect to go over well doesn’t. At least that’s what I’ve found since I blog in different niches, trying to integrate them.

I remember your greatest post! You definitely had a lot of energy!

  • Hi Stacy,

I found your blog a few weeks ago, through Matty’s recommendation. I’m a new blogger, so I love to find blogs I can really learn from. I was also very interested in your thyroid cancer post, as my sister also had it when she was only 19.

When I’m writing a post, I’m really trying to make it the best post ever. But what I think is my best post, and what readers think is my best post can be completely different, as I quickly discovered!

When I started out, I wrote 5 posts a week to build up a base (and figure out if I actually liked blogging). Three months later and I’m transitioning to 3 posts a week so I have more time to engage with people about each post.

Here is a link to what I see as my best post: http://bit.ly/dFEbtU

    Hi Marianne,
I find it amazing how many young people are coming up with cancer. My stepbrother (same age as me) had a different type several years before me and a friend’s younger sister had thyroid cancer as a preschooler! I can’t even imagine.

You started out the right way with posting frequently in the beginning! That’s a great way to build a list of posts for readers to be able to reference and also for google and alexa rankings too.

    Take care,

  • Stacy,

My blog started out as a daily rambling about my adventures in learning woodworking. I would say I tried to write something (and photograph) I would be proud to share, every day. But the realities were that about once a month, I would just ‘mail it in’. Still, after over 484 blog posts, I am happy with most of them.

I do admit though, that my absolute BEST work, can’t be found on my blog. I write about 2 – 3 guest posts per month too. They are ususally rants about social media and the silly things people think they can get away with. These posts don’t fit with my blog, so I give them away.

I would like to choose a blog post on my site, but alas, if I am honest, then I must choose from the guest posts. Here is one I did for Gini Dietrich’s Spin Sucks blog. http://www.spinsucks.com/social-media/fakehashtaggery/

    Sincerely,

    Brian Meeks
    http://ExtremelyAverage.com

p.s. I don’t really use my blog for blogging much anymore. 98% of the posts are chapters in my latest novel. The blogging led to mystery writing and now that is mostly what I do. I have almost completed my 3rd novel. :-)

    Hi Brian,
It sounds like you have been through a lot of different stages with your blog! I like the title of your blog, it sounds like you really could take it in a number of directions if you decide that you tire from one niche!

Great idea to guest post about topics that don’t fit into your blog. I may need to snag that idea. :)

  • I don’t always try to make each post the best thing I’ve ever written, but I do try to make it the best it can be with correct spelling and punctuation and some basic writing rules, like avoiding redundancy. Not every one will be a winner, but I can avoid looking ridiculous.

  • I obviously try to make every post as great as I can, but the reality is, they all won’t be amazing. I’m still trying to get into my rhythm and create a solid schedule, so some of my posts are definitely lackluster. I think the key is just write as best as you can in the moment. If I’m really not feeling it. I stop.

    Stacy,

Ideally we all try to publish our best content every time. In theory, each click of the publish button will be our best yet. Realistically though, it doesn’t always happen. I have to admit that I’ve published just to get something out. I’ve also not published for long periods of time because I didn’t think I had anything worth writing about.

I think the lesser of two evils is to publish, even if it isn’t the greatest content. Although it might not attract new readers, your regular ones will respond to it.

As others have said here, what you think will be a hit might not get much of a response, and what you are certain is average content turns out to be your most popular post. You just never know.

For me, my best post didn’t get the most comments. But it meant a lot to me personally and came from the heart.

  • Hi Stacy,

Great idea for a blog post! (Why didn’t I think of that :) )

I think I shared before that I am a perfectionist, so I try to make each post I write the best I possibly can. I never write just to put out a post, that’s why I haven’t joined any blogging contests. I’m afraid of putting out mediocre content. That wouldn’t be fair to my readers.

Not all of my posts are equal. Some are better than others. It’s hard to pick my best one so I’ll go with the one that has the most comments http://enlightenednetworker.com/personal-development/ready-step-comfort-zone/

When I start a post, I am always trying my best to make it perfect. But the reality is sometime I have to click the publish button just to have new post. I know that this isn’t fair to my readers, but fear of lack of schedule pushs me to do so.

So far, my best post, in my opinion, is the 80/20 rule :)
