When you were growing up did you ever want to join a tribe? It was not high on my list of of things to do! Then again for many years the only type of tribe that I was familiar with were the ancient tribes and the tribes in third world countries.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock or never turn on a computer you know that online tribes are all the rage.
An online tribe is a group of people who gather and and form a group to encourage and promote each other. There are syndication tribes where the members share each others content on twitter, facebook, digg, stumbleupon, etc. There are also commenting tribes where the members comment on each others posts.
There are other kinds of tribes but the kinds that I have participated in and I have to say that the benefits of a commenting tribe are much more significant for many reasons!
More Comments – since the main point of a commenting tribe is to comment on each others blogs obviously more comments are brought to your blog. Generally speaking the law of reciprocity is at work here, the more you give to others the more that you will receive.
Better Quality Posts – There are many aspects of a tribe that can help you to produce better quality posts. You learn from reading other blogs, you gain feedback from your comments, you discover which posts get the most shares, and learning through writing more posts.
Networking – You get to me meet a lot of great people who have similar goals as you do. You can brainstorm with them, ask questions, give your ideas, and so much more.
Gain Credibility and Social Proof – When others see all the comments that you receive on your blog they will be more likely to stick around and see what you have to say because they see that so many others find value from you.
Discover Your Potential – If you really challenge yourself in a tribe you will find that you can do more than you thought you could. Whether it be more posts per week, more commenting, replying to your own comments, or some other goal you will probably surprise yourself!
Better Alexa Ranking – I have seen a big improvement in my alexa ranking since I joined the Prove It group in January and two other tribes since then. I have heard others share the same from their participation in tribes!
What amazing benefits have you discovered from tribes?
To Your Success,

Great post, Stacy! I think that another key thing to remember with the tribe is whether it is a tribe that fits for you. A lot of tribes do good things, but not all of them will work for everyone. This way, you can benefit everyone when you find the one that works for you and you make a greater contribution to the tribe.

Great point about the tribe needing to be a good fit!
Thanks!

I’m with you 100% on this Stacy.
The collective energy and potential of a group benefits all of it’s members. As Steve pointed out above, finding the right tribe for you is of the utmost importance.
The internet has opened up the possibilities more than ever before to find others who share the same values and interests, whatever ‘your thing’ is.
Great that you’ve broken down the benefits of joining a tribe so clearly.
All the best,
Jym

Hi Stacy,
You have covered this topic well.
I got involved with tribes when they only just started and have been a member of a few. They have evolved and definitely become better the more formalized they have become.

Hi Stacy,
You obviously know my opinion of tribes.
They have been the number 1 key factor in helping me get my blog going, keep it going, and keeping ME going too! The friends I’ve made, the resources I’ve been made aware of, the training I’ve received, the networking, traffic, list building and lead generation have ALL been helped by participating in tribes.
Great post!

I do agree however like many said above it really depends on whether or not you find the right tribe. And the question is, how do you find the right tribe? Some are everywhere but others are harder to find or break into.

Hi Dalia,
Finding the right tribe is really important. I think that trial and error could be the way because you never know until you try it out. There’s a good one on FB that I belong to which I like a lot and the Mastermind one that I joined last week and posted about. Let me know if you want to try one, the fb one has people from all different niches.

Excellent article, Stacy. But, finding the right tribe can be difficult — if you’re only interested in your own focus. I think, by expanding into different tribes, you can gain a broader perspective and discover parts of yourself that were hiddent before being challenged.
It’s not as though you have to join the tribe forever (is it?), but you can find out if it’s the one for you. I left one tribe because, although the ladies were delightful, every posting became some kind of product review or coupon deals. The other tribe members were doing the same thing. This isn’t always apparent in the beginning.
But, the tribal approach may have become the online companion of business organizations in the bricks and mortar marketplace. We tend to forget that groups have always gathered for resource strength and support, but the Internet has created another dimension.
For your generation, it’s a perfectly natural environment but, for someone who’s whole business life preceded Internet marketing, it’s a marvel and breathtaking in its capabilities.

Hi Sharlene,
Finding the right tribe is important! I can see why you left the tribe, I’m sure that you can find one that suits you. I wrote about a couple that I’m in in reply to someone else on this post. Perhaps one of them would suit you.

Everything you posted is so true. You will notice a big change if you belong to a tribe. Plus, you will meet the nicest, most supportive people. Networking is great but when you work at home it’s vital to form a tribe to help support each other get social contact with other professional.

Hey Stacy,
Tribes are my best discovery this year. When I decided to start my blog over, my mission was to belong to a group that I can learn, grow and build relationships from.
So far my first tribe experience has been wonderful and I see the benefits of being apart of it is helping my Alexia ranking as well. Every day I see a good difference.

I would love to increase my tribe involvement, but it is not always so easy. I do belong to a Facebook group that has been very helpful in growth, but beyond that, I’ve not been able to find a tribe home. Any suggestions?
