I am participating in Steven Aitchison’s Mind Alchemy course and the task for Day Eight is to choose theme songs for your life.
A few weeks ago I posted a similar topic, sharing about five songs that inspire my soul. All of those songs could easily be theme songs in my life because they all deeply meaningful to me, touching different emotions and memories.
I don’t want to leave this day’s task at that, I want to share other meaningful songs in this post and why they qualify as a theme song in my life. To keep this page from loading too slowly I will stick with the 80 and 90s.
La Isla Bonita
This song is the song that helped me to gain a love for the hispanic culture which included 4 years of Spanish classes and the desire to someday adopt from a hispanic country. I’m not sure if I ever will but I would still love to.
This song also came from the first cassette tape that I ever owned. I spent my preteen years singing all of her songs and wishing that I could be just like her some day.
Love Shack
This song is definitely the theme song for my junior high / early teen years. I was known in my school for being obsessed with the B-52′s along with one of my best friends at the time. I have so many stories that I could tell, but to spare myself and my friend the embarrassment I’ll just let you know that the B-52′s defined those years for me. I even used their song “Roam” in a school project about saving the earth.
All Through the Night
Cyndi Lauper was another favorite of mine in those early teen years. This was a song that I listened to repeatedly for a period of time when I was going through a rough patch and felt all alone in this world that was against me. Not that I was a dramatic teenager or anything! This song without a doubt defines that short period of my life.
Place In This World
Michael W Smith was a favorite of mine through my high school years. This song does sum up how I felt through my high school and college years. Years of discovery, questioning, confusion, excitement, dreaming, growing up, mistakes, and so much more.
At The Beginning
This song was sung by two friends as I walked down the aisle. It was a favorite song of my then-fiance and I and we had actually watched the movie with his daughter. It was a fun song that we could all enjoy together. The two same friends who sang the song caught my garter and my bouquet and they are now married, to each other.
Tainted Love
For some reason this song was playing on the radio of nearly every store that we went into on our honeymoon. It’s not like the song was popular at that point, just shy of the Y2K worries. What a theme for a honeymoon! At least we could laugh about it!
A little musical humor for you…
For many years I thought that:
- Michael Jackson was singing about “The Man in the Middle“
- Johnny Rivers sang about a “Secret Asian Man”
- The Eurythmics sang that “Sweet Dreams Are Made of These” (Ok, that one wasn’t so funny.)
Well, now you know quite a bit more about me than you did before. That’s for sure!

Steven,
Thank you so much! It was fun to write about why I chose the songs, it was a trip down memory lane!
